How exactly, are the Boston Red Sox paying $125M for the team they're fielding right now? Who is making this money? And who's worth what they're making?

Manny is pretty obviously worth his 19M. Schilling is as well, worth the $12.75 he's on the books for. But beyond that... who else was worth this money?

Just for starters:

Matt Clement - $9.75M... an NL 4 starter... at almost $10M a year.
Jason Varitek - $9M and batting what, .240 before his injury?
Mike Lowell - $8M... and fading faster than Boston's wildcard hopes.
Trot Nixon - $7.5M for a guy who's never hit a lefty in his career.
Keith Foulke - $7.25M... and yes, he was worth it at the time, but such a drastic falloff for this guy.
Josh Beckett - Gets a 4 year extension at $10M a season... for what? His ERA is pushing 5. he wins because of the run support, not because he's any good.

And how's that contract extension for Coco Crisp working out? Three more years of him?

Who signed these contracts? Fire him!

Yeah, the Yanks are spending $200M... but the players signed to their deals have produced. Abreu's hitting .400 since coming over, Jeter's an MVP candidate, Giambi's near the league lead in homers, A-Rod... well, he's A-Rod.

Johnson, despite his ERA is doing enough to stay near the AL lead in wins (similarly to Beckett, but hey, he's old enough to be Beckett's dad.) Mussina, even in the twilight of his career, has been great. Rivera, as well, has done his job.

It seems like with exception to Schilling, Ramirez and Ortiz, the other 22 men on the roster ought to be in the minors... and they're making about 90M between them.

I didn't go into detail about Papelbon, Lester, etc... because they're playing for the major league minimum. That's a number determined in the CBA, not a figure that the front office signed these guys to.

And as for Ortiz, yes, he's an amazing bargain at 6.5M this year... however, his contract escalates to 12.5M for 2007 and 2008... which means more money invested into an aging player. Who knows... 2 years from now, he might start looking like Jim Rice did at age 34.

Big Papi is worth every cent!

V-tek & Trot Nixon are clutch players so we pay to keep them around .
Plus most of these players were around to help win a world series that the city waited for for 86 years! They get paid to try and do it again!

Hey Yankee Fans.....

This current problem all started with Varitek going down. He is our defensive MVP. As stated in the above, every pitcher on the Sox staff has the ultimate trust in what pitch he calls. When Tek went down, the ball quickly went rolling badly for the Sox.

Ever heard of injuries? Sheffield and Matsui ring a bell for you? Thats not an excuse, its a fact, period. I'm a Red Sox fan, and yes, its a bad time right now. But for you guys to be going off the way you are...let me remind you about the Great Choke of 2004. The Red Sox philosophy is a mixture of Billy Beane's Moneyball in Oakland along with spending at the same time. Very different from the Yankees...all they do is spend. Boston can not compete with the Yankees in the spending department. One Boston writer compared it recently to the KC Royals spending with that of Boston's. There is like a 70 million dollar difference in payroll. Look what KC has in comparison to the Red Sox BEFORE injuries. The Yankees have a payroll of 70 million or more in comparison to the Sox. With that being said, if the Yankees don't win, then thats a HUGE problem, bigger than what the Red Sox have right now.

When it rains, it pours. We have a hail storm going in Boston right now. Theo will be calling up many players from AAA Pawtucket to fill the ranks. The major reason why things are not going well is because of mutiple injuries. You can't predict that when you are signing guys in December for the up and coming season. I do agree that letting Damon go was a huge mistake...but again...thats part of the game.

The Yankees should win, after all, you get what you pay for. Steinbrenner ruined baseball. Just ask people who live in places like Kansas City (who by the way was an awesome team in the 80's) and teams like Pittsburgh, or any small market team. They will never win due to teams like New York continuing to buy championships. They don't have the revenue to compete with the Yankees. When was the last "home grown" Yankee Championship? Hmmmm. Besides the Trenton Thunder, the Yankee Farm system sucks. The Yankees just trade money, not prospects worth anything on the market because they have little to none.

Am I a disgruntled Red Sox fan, yup. We'll be back. We've got some young talent that NY doesnt have. You got Johnny, which will hurt us big time. I have faith in Theo and Francona. They got it done once and it will happen again soon. This bad streak we are on will in time pass and all will be well in Red Sox Nation. Until then, enjoy your ride Yankee Fans, because Detroit, Chicago, or even Minnesota will knock you off.

Wow, I'm a Yankees fan, and when you said Varitek isn't worth the money, my mouth dropped. This is the same guy who is the captain of the Sux, who every single pitcher has faith in when he calls the pitch. Yeah, he's not that good at the plate, but he's not A-rod and strikes out all the time. Lowell is the other guy who is having a decent year. Other than that, you are right. Terry Francoma and that retard Theo Epstein made all the wrong moves this off-season. How can you draw a line at 3 yrs/10 million for JOHNNY DAMON!!!! Then they go out at the trade deadline, and Theo says he doesn't want to risk his future. WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!? The way things are looking now, that future is probably not winning another ring in 84 years considering how much money they have pissed away on these players.

But, its all good. Keep them around, I'd love to see Boston Massacre 2007. Go Yanks!!

Stupid question...the Sox took some risks based on the markets at the time and what they had to play with money-wise...

Clement was the best starter on the market not named Randy Johnson, and you always overpay for pitching when it's like that...it was a bit much, but not absurd...

Tek is worth his dough...I won't even get into it...this was a bad season at the plate but it's unfair to pick on his off year with his record and all he does for the team...

Lowell has been worth that contract...gold glove 3rd hitting .290 with 15 HR...that's fine, thanks...

Trot's deal was made a while ago, based on his ability at the time and a calculated increase...he was actually hitting lefties better at the time, and if he's not hurt I still like him out there...he's TRAWT!

Foulke's coming back, maybe not a closer any more, but a solid relief guy, and if he never saves another game he was worth his money for 2004 alone...

Beckett is too young to judge at this point, and 10 mil a season for his potential and resume at his age, I like that deal...look at it compared to Clement or any other big pitching signings...not a bad deal...he needs to learn to pitch in the AL, not just throw, but I like his arm and his head...he's worth a shot since we have some young arms and most veteran studs are locked up...

Coco has been rough out there...not sure how that will work out, and the one deal I hated last off-season was losing Damon...so I'll grant you this one...

However, put all of that into context with the $1 billion that the Yanks have spent over the last 5 seasons for NOTHING!!!

We can still hold up our 2004 trophy nice and high...

Until the Yanks finish another one off, I'll take the Sox, proudly!

The Red Sox and Red Sox Nation make NO apologies for the plight the Sox are now undergoing. The pitching has been weak and many injuries have hurt, so they have fallen on bad times. The fact is, we support our team through good times and bad times, and we do NOT boo one of the best hitters in baseball because he is having an off year. In other words, we are loyal fans, not fair weather fans like the New York crowd.

Chow!!

Look at the cubs.
#7 in payroll.
94,424,499
http://www.onestopbaseball.com/TeamPayroll.asp

and they are the second worst team in the NL.
and the 4th worst team in all of baseball.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/standings;_ylt=AjEaC0Lg77H1HDX7UwIxmgMRvLYF

at least Boston is 6th best in the AL.
and seventh best overall in baseball.
only the mets have a better NL record them them.

Boston would be in first place in NL Central or NL west.
and would have the wild card if they were in the NL east.

the AL is so goo this year. it is crazy!!!!!!!!!

Ortiz is worth a lot more than Giambi and his steroids. The Yankees haven't won a thing yet. How's A-Rod working out KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK in his last 20 at bats.

The Red Sox and Yankees can spend all the money they want, but the Mets and Tigers can still be better.
