You should never stop them from downloading. These security fixes / application fixes are needed by Windows to correct any ongoing or soon to be exploited flaw in the operating system itself or software.
For Windows XP Post-Sevice Pack 2
Though if you must stop them...go to: Start, Control Panel, Security Center. At the bottom click on automatic updates.
Now you will have 4 choices on what you would like to do.
1. Automatic - Now I do automatic...and just put in an update time when i wont be on my pc and it will be on
2. Download/No Install - This one may be for you since it will download them but not install them.
3. Notify - This one also is ok but not as good as the other two
4. Turn Off - This is the one you really shouldnt do since the computer could be vulnerable to new viruses, worms, trojans, etc.

Download SP3 standalone. If you already have sp3 then there should only be a handful of updates left as microsoft stopped supporting XP a long time ago. They are no longer making updates. Go to control panel, windows updates, and disable automatic updates.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pcboostcleaner.net
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Well you can do what the previous answers say, that is, turning off automatic updates at the Control Panel. If it still bothers you with security paranoia and such, you can always open a 'run' instance and run 'msconfig', then on the 'serivces' tab, disable 'automatic updates' and reboot your computer.

well you can set it up so it wont download unless you tell it to. go to your control panel and click on automatic updates. there you can change how you want to download them or not. as far as to stop it once its already started, i really dont know besides just unplugging your computer.

You can set those settings right at the windows update site. You can either not download them, get an alert or have them automagically download and install themselves.
