Years ago I would've said John Entwhistle or Jack Bruce. Today, I don't know.
There is a kick-*** bassist who plays with Joe Bonamassa named Eric Czar. Check him out on the CD "Blues Deluxe".

depends on the genre and style of the bass player.......slap and pop, funk style I have to say Les Claypool and Flea (especially for his speed)
