is it the sheets that covers it or the actual mattress and pillows?

Sheets should be washed every week or sooner if dirty.

Mattress and pillows should be sunned every half a year.

They should be replaced every 3-5 years.

When you stop having dreams. Quality sleep is most important, not the mattress condition. Typically speaking, high quality mattresses have a 10 year warranty, which tells one that it will be around for 10 years. Although after about 3 years it will start losing it's comfort, then the support in the next 2-3 years. Mattresses last quite awhile but they lose their benfits much sooner than most people think. If your health is of high importance and have a quailty mattress older than 5 years, than replace it. If you want to end up like most people with a bad back, keep it as long as you can( waking up with spring impressions on your back is maybe too long) .
Pillow: If you're waking up with neck discomfort or experiencing headaches more often than usual, replace it. If you're feeling good, than your pillow should be replaced every month unless its hypoallergenic (antimicrobial), then go by its recommendation.(yearly is common) Take Care, and by the way, I hope you didn't mean just sheets and pillow case?

Its depends upon how comfortable you feel with your existing mattress and pillows. Some mattress last for 10 years, but some last for 2-3 years only.

As far as pillows are concerden, every 6 months - 1 year you can change it,

Change your mattress when it starts to get lumpy and the springs are digging into you or you can afford to upgrade. Pillows never last in my household. As soon as they are flat they are tossed. I would say maybe 6 months.

your pillow and mattress, or your pillowcase and sheets? your pillow and mattress can range...it all depends on how the pillow and mattess feels, if it's getting lumpy and loosing its special feel then it is time to change...i've had my mattess for over 10 years and its still going strong...and my pillows i change every year to two years, just to keep it fluffy and soft...as for pillowcases and sheets every week or everyother week, to keep it fresh and not feeling old...it all depends on how you like the feel of your sheets and what nots...i do my pillowcase and sheet laundry at least once a month, because it doesn't bother me and still smells fresh...
