This guy came out on fire last year, finishing second in the ROY voting and hitting .300 with 14 homers in under 300 at-bats. This year, he's at an anemic .257/.283/.449, numbers that remind me of something Dave Kingman would do. He's also only drawn 14 walks against his 104 strikeouts.

My question is, will he learn some plate discipline and become a solid contributor, or will he continue being one of the worst regular OFs in the National League? He's only 22, but is he capable of turning things around long-term?

Andrew - I think he's killing his team with that OBP. And for a newby in the field, he's doing good - he definitely has an awesome arm. Hope you're right about him turning it around.

Paul O'Neill's career would make him a success.

He will likely learn some more plate discipline, but many players are decidedly stubborn about that. I would be surprised if he ever takes 100 walks.

If he can get his OBP to .370, he will be great. It is not very likely that he will ever be as good as Howard.

By the way, Marcus Giles OBP is 80 points higher than his average. That isn't bad.

That's Francouer's biggest fault: plate discipline. Same with Marcus Giles.

I've seen Francouer swing at balls that hit dirt in the opposite batter's box and strike out.

He's got power, he's got a great arm (anyone remember him throwing out Gonzo at the plate twice last year in the same game?). If Francouer learns some plate discipline he can definitely get his average up to the high 200s or low 300s and jack up those HR and RBI numbers.

Right now he's an average or slightly above average outfielder, he could blossom into one of the better outfielders of his generation.

i dont see how you can call him one of the worst outfielders, the guy is about to have 30 home runs and 100 rbi. And yeah he is 22 and with his kind of talent he will learn plate disipline. The difference between him and Ryan Howard is Howard is 28 years old and has learned plate dicipline in the minors while Francoeur is learning on the fly.

I see him doing very well in the future. You can teach plate disclipine . He already has good power, a good arm, and a good clove. With more plate disclipine he could become a great player. He has great power, and watching him take batting practice proved this, as he hit EVERY pitch out of the park.
