Yes you really do need algebra and calculus in order to graduate from college.
You may also find them quite helpful in many professional endeavors later in life, but for now all you need to know is that if you don't master these disciplines; you flunk out.
KISS: Keep It Simple Sweetheart.

Algebra and calculus are two very different things. Algebra is very useful. Calculus is basically useless unless you are going into an unusually mathematical field. I think everyone should learn algebra, but I have never used anything from the 3 years of calculus I took decades ago. So if you don't find it useful and you don't want to fail it, why take it?

Separate the use of algebra and calculus from the mental training it provides.
Problem solving is one of the most important skills you will ever learn. he ability to take a problem, analyze it and get the correct answer will be a skill that is useful in life.
The knowledge of algebra will also be useful when applied to problems.
The knowledge of calculus will be useful only if you take up science or engineering in college. All the sciences require a thorough knowledge of calculus in order to solve the problems n physics, chemistry or varied types of engineering.
Think of calculus as the mathematics of change. It is used frequently to determine how temperature changes or how objects speed up or slow down.
Bottom line: the skills of problem solving are more important than the specific math skill. But just think, when you learn one the other comes along for no extra effort.

Algebra is usually used to estimate profits and finances. The X's and Y's just represent variables. If you ever start your own business, you will need algebra a lot. As for Calculus, what do you think that building designers use? Yes, they use mostly Trigonometry, but Calculus and Trig are very closely related.

Algebra is defenitely used.
Calculus, I do not think I hve used in life. I work with Printers as a mechanic and Lay Tile for a living.
Algebra, you use every day weather you think you do or not.
The bigger benefit is that it teaches you critical thinking and explores additional paths in life that you may enjoy. Same reason you take any other class.

Actually, those are more helpful than you realize. For example, algebra involves using things you know in order to figure out things you don't know. The things you don't know are listed as variables (such as x) and the things you know are listed as numbers.
But you use the same techniques even when you aren't specifically doing math. For example, you get up in the morning and listen to the traffic report. If one highway is really busy and backed up, you decide to take another highway. You use what you know (highway 1 is backed up) to figure out something else (is highway 1 or highway 2 faster).
In your case, you use math to figure out what is the best route to go to the store. You use it to figure out how much you will spend. You use it to figure out whether it is better to buy the bigger size of potato chips or the smaller size of potato chips.
So algebra (and all math skill) is extremely practical in an everyday basis.

Without algebra and calculus, things like TVs and computers wouldn't exist. You wouldn't be on Yahoo! Answers without math.

Both are used extensively in one field or other.
Algebra - for any equation you make using the constraints (in business, in science etc)
calculus - science, finance (advanced topics in investment management etc)
I would suggest u to not just learn these topics but master them if u plan to graduate in science or do MBA later in your life.
