When do you feed your horses in the morning? Before or after you work them? And if you feed them before, how long do you wait until you start working them?
The reason I ask is because when I worked on the track, we fed the horses after their work out. Now that I work with strickly jumpers... I am trying to get my day's training schedule in order. I would like to start working them at 5AM so I can take a break and send the kids off to school. I usually wait two hours after feeding a horse before working them but I really do not want to get up at 3. I have four horses that need to be worked and I would like to get them done before 2PM. (So I can do all the other work that needs to be done!)
So what do you, my fellow trainers do?

If you are going to start that early try giving them enough to think they are getting fed (a handful) and their hay. Ride, and give them their real breakfast after you have ridden. We always did this at the shows when we had one that had to get lounged and then had an 8:00 class.

I'd suggest do your work at 5am and when all done, feed them after they have cool down time - then take the kids to school (timed so the horses eat while kids go to school)

It sounds like you only have the 4 horses with you so its not mass horse issue on feeding time.

Other option is give them only 1/2 a flake before working and take out the one that doesn't care first (gets full meal upon return). That way, the three can eat while your working the first one.

Well... it really depends. a lot of horses are finicky and will misbehave is they are hungry. most will not care. SO

to avoid colic, i would feed after. If they are kept in a stall over night, i would leave hay to munch overnight, and then grain them afer they are sufficiently cool from their workout. average horse id say 15-25 mins.
some horses are moer prone to colic than others, so be careful

also, the reason i prefer after is because they are not groggy from just loading up, and they step a little lighter and, at the end, they come to find out there is a reward for being such a good horse and letting you ride!!! :)

it is good to wai a long time after feeding them b4 you work. youre smart. it would be tons easier to feed after though.

I train halter horses. I feed at 7am, and I start working horses between 8-8:30. I feed again at 5pm if that's of any help to you. I don't have any issues with tying up or colic by giving them that hour or so after feeding. Hope that helps!

Can you feed your after break rides at 5 when you go out and your early rides when you come back from sending off the kids and they've cooled down? Everyone could have hay to keep them from getting cranky if they're waiting.

well we dont have jumping horses we have rodeo horses so what i would do is when you catch them give them about a handful of grain thats it then after you work them you should let them cool off first and then feed them because i ythink that if you feed them before they will get more restless and just like humans they get upset stomachs too so would you want to exercise after you just ate? i know i wouldnt but i hope i helped a little bit.

there are an excellent type of assistance contained in the e book Heartland: Coming living house. Have your horse trot in a circle round you, and flicking a "whip" behind him yet not actual hitting him to maintain him going. once you spot that your horse's ear closest to you is targeted on you thoroughly, turn your body away and are not making eye contact. If he walks over to you and could keep on with you everywhere, it means you've made progression. strengthen. good success!
