do you know a good and reliable site that has up to date price ranges for gems, giving indications of what to look for in order to get a good price estimate?

If you sell to an online dealer you will almost certainly get your pants pulled down. Learn what you need to know. Prices are paid per point or Carat. Be careful. A lot of very very good snides out there.

I've been out of the business for 10 years, but I worked for a jewelry manufacturer and we bought oval and pear shaped emeralds that were .5-.6 carats for $100 each (approximately). We would sell the product at a 100% mark up to retailers who then marked it up anywhere from another 100-500% for final sales (Yellowstone park gift shops-100%, Rodeo Drive in Hollywood-500%) for example. Be aware that ALL emeralds are oiled and waxed to hide cracks and fissures. Never clean in hot water or the coating will melt and the stone will look like hell. As to learn more you'll have to search the Internet...I suggest the Gemological Institute of America...the leading source of Gem studies and training in North America...I took a two year course from them in Colored Stones via correspondence course.

You can try www.gemval.com but I can't remember if they value emeralds without you being a member, I know the system works free for many stones. Try a Google search on emeralds for sale and go through some of the sites that come up and this will give you a good idea of present day prices.

The Gemological Institute of America has a great Web site which has an online bookstore.
I have a copy of
Standard Catalogue of Gem Values by Anna M Millar and John Sinkankas.

I suggest trying at the G.I.A. trusted and respected they will lead you in the right direction
If you are going to buy online I suggest You (don't buy it if you don't know what your buying) or (if you haven't seen or tested or had it appraised)
