update #1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a8d9eb73-5f8c-4b9a-940f-9157a3b3d774&displaylang=en
Windows Messenger standard update 5.1.0701
But we don't want to give you that...
http://get.live.com/messenger/overview
for Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0812.00
then...
http://mess.be/
and get Mess Patch for Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0812.00
then
run it with this file (save it as an ini file? Make one and amend it is easiest...)
[MessPatchPrefs]

and you'll have no adverts and some other crap removed.
You can then also browse the settings in MSN and turn some other features off like those annoying tab buttons on the left. :)

Which version of MSN Messenger do you have, and what operating system are you using?
You should be if at least at MSN Messenger 7.0. And you rarely have to remove it, it's more likely your settings either in Messenger or you haven't allowed it to pass through your firewall.
If you want to try deleting the program, and downloading the latest version, Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Scroll down to MSN Messenger. You might have an option there to update if you are using XP Pro SP2. If not, choose it and take whatever option seems best. Reboot afterward and download it again and see if it now works. If not, open your firewall, choose help and see how to allow the program through. Good luck with it.

MSN messenger has dicky fits sometimes and doesn't allow you to use it. Just one of those little quirks I think. Mine is working okay at the moment, but I have had occasions where it just logs me out, or shows me as 'offline' when I am actually there. very strange. I haven't found a way to fix it, other than try again later, sorry.

I have been using Msn Messenger for long time.
The only problem might be voice communication between people without ADSL

msn never works any more! thanks for the great update from Microsoft, but a couple of my friends lost all their contacts. mine just takes forever to load, and regularly crashes the whole computer.
i use trillian now instead. i have been using msn for 5 years, so i'm not inherently anti-microsoft - but windows live is closer to windows dead for me.

If you can not completely uninstall it by using your control panel, try installing it again, it should tell you that it is already installed and ask if you want to continue, click " Yes ". Make sure you use the same passport or password to keep your pals.
