I think what you are experiencing is some kind of American glitch, since they have 5 digit zip codes. Canada has the postal code with 3 letters and 3 numbers, interchanging.
I have found that many times when asked for my postal code, the computer won't let me do it, because it wants a 5 digit zipcode, so what I do is either enter 12345, if it will let me or just pick a zipcode. For example, that popular television show Beverly Hills 90210, that's a zipcode in California. That's the best I can offer, I hope it helps you.
