Hi Teach!
I think the expression is positive depending on your outlook on life really.
Sometimes short term an outcome can seem negative but years later we see that it taught us something useful. Alternatively, we can suddenly get what we seemingly wish for and it brings us nothing but misery - but maybe yet again a lesson learned.
For me personally, I do try (but usually badly) to look objectively at what is happening around me to try and determine if I need to learn something.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that never to treat "good" and "bad" experiences as a fixed experience. If something great happens I try not to let pride or over-confidence take hold (the fear of pride before the fall).
Similarly, when I have been in the midst of a seemingly negative experience, I look back at other occasions where things were not right and know that the bad times like the good times are inter-changeable and move very quickly.
It's human nature that we rarely take lessons from the "perfect" times - so I try and remember that the bad times have taught me many a positive lesson on life.
In conclusion, to answer your question Teach, I do believe that everything works out in the end.

In the END, yes. Along the way, most things don't. That's why we have to keep trying different approaches to problems all the time. But, we keep trying and eventually we do find some kind of answers that are at least livable. That's where I think the saying comes from.
Another way of looking at it is that everything we do is just a roll of the dice. That's why we accept things that aren't as good as we originally expected - because maybe you rolled a 3 this time, and you might roll a 6 if you try again, but you also might roll a 1 - and in that case you'd just accept your circumstances.

Work out into what? What are you working out? Everything ends and whatever something is at the end is how it has worked out to be. In that sense everything works out.

As far as the evidence of everything that has ever happened in the history of universe so far goes I would conclude that life is not fair. When it ever seems to be fair it is often a case of luck/accident. There are some very kind, gifted people who get what they deserve but don't count on it.
The best way to live is to have a joke, be kind, accept your limitations but try to do your very best at what you can do well. Try to love something or someone to the fullest.

Everything works out eventually, not always as expected but the end comes when your life is over, unless of course you believe in the afterlife or reincarnation, in which case everything works out perpetually!

It has no choice but to work out. To what "end" are you referring? The universe expands and collapses over and over. Each time creating a more perfect universe. One day it will be perfect. Our bodies our limited in time for a good reason. We are not perfect but we improve just like every situation we learn.

Definitely, because as life unfolds even if in a direction you didn't expect you grow and adapt learning from each new experience. We always find some comfort or a niche amongst the constant ebb and flow of life, hence it always works out.

I think we will all be surprised when the "end" comes. I don't think the things we all think are imporant will be nearly as important as some other things..
but pretty much if nothing you end up worm food, so it's good cuz someone gets something out of it.
