What would happen if everyone just decided to celebrate Christmas without giving gifts? I dont know about anyone else but I am sick of being in debt after Christmas and I am thinking about not participating this year. Anyone else interested?

Its your choice to make and yes it is all commercial. Read the Bible Christmas is not even in there, neither is the date of Jesus' birth, don't you think that if Christmas was as important as all religions,well some, make it out to be that that tidbit of info would be there? Somewhere? Neither is Easter by the way. Oh Lord I think I opened up a can of worms here en? Check it out for yourself

Get creative! Just because the commercial norm is to go and buy gifts for others does not mean you have to conform to the norm!
There are lots of things you can do that does not involve buying gifts.
Take a bum on the street for instance. If you give him cash and say do the right thing, what do you think he will do? Of course he will get another bottle of wine and drink the cash.
Now if you take him to a hotel/shelter or something like that, and give him a room for a week/month and take him to the clothing store and give him new clothes, and then take him to a restaurant and feed him good food and show him that he is a human being like everyone else, he can begin to realize his self-worth. This is a gift you cannot buy. This is a gift that when given keeps on giving.
Another way to give without using your pocket book is to make gifts.
I myself am blessed with the ability to play music. This year I plan to make a Christmas album CD with me playing the music and singing. I am then going to burn a copy for each person I come in contact to at Christmas time.

So try to use your creativity instead of cash.

Hope that helps.

One of my teachers told me once that her family decided on rather then spending 20 bucks on a gift for someone who spent 20 bucks on a gift for you, which is like buying your own gift, they give the money to charity which I think is a great idea

Our family long ago began exchanging gifts that were only hand crafted...nothing store bought was allowed...really forced us to develop skills not common today (macrame, knitting, wood carving, modeling, ....you get the idea). I occasionally will buy a gift for an office party...but family gets hand crafts (this last year was matted charcoal drawings...not masterpieces, but decent).

My boyfriend's family has been doing that since he was born - they are "church of christ' religion-wise and his particular church in PA does not celebrate the commercialization of the holiday - they celebrate Christ's Birth. It is hard getting used to it after being raised Catholic. It's sort of a habit for me to start xmas shopping around October and want a tree and such!

have you been reading How the Grinch Stoled Christmas? I tend to make my gifts online with very little cost.

Debt=not good.

I'm cursing my family by knitting for them. Minimal debt and a present so handmade, they can't complain to my face!!! All adults are subject to this; kids of course are exempt.

Christmas is Jesus birthday. go to church and give a gift to Jesus.
Tell your family and friends that is what you are going to do and they should not buy you a gift . If they buy one any way refuse to take it.
