Because they have bastardised the English language so much, like everything they get their hands on they've ruined it.
For instance the word 'colour', they spell it 'color', it's the English language and not the American language.
Typical of the US though, see something and take it over, make it American!!!!!!

O.K. - Here's the real answer...............
Originally, there were two types of football in the USA:
1. AsSOCiation Football - I deliberately capitalized the SOC in
AsSOCiation Football to show how the word "Soccer" evolved
from the words Association Football. The words "Association
Football" are no longer used for the world's most popular
sport. What you call Football, and which we originally called
Association Football, we now call Soccer.
2. Rugby Football - Also an English invented sport. We dropped
the word Football and simply call it Rugby. We compete
internationally in Rugby as well, but not so good at it yet.
3. American Football - This game borrowed from the basically
"running game" of rugby and from the "kicking" game of (what
we call) soccer.
Hopefully the above brief description answers your question. Yes, we are out of step with the rest of the world on this. But you have to understand the above history. Since we play American football here, we do not use the word "America". It's just "football", a game which took aspects from two great games - Association FOOTBALL and Rugby FOOTBALL.

American Football involves kicking a ball with one's foot (hence Football).
Americans like to be different and contrary. What can I say? Americans can also tell the difference between Rugby and Football.
I am attaching some links that explain the American eccentricities of naming sports.
Soccer "evolved" from the word Association. Read all about it! :)

We are just simply learning from the rest of the worlds short comings and mistakes. We know how do to everything the best way because we are perfect and if you disagree with us we will bomb you. So I don't want to hear it anymore.

Why do you care? They are the games being played in the US so we'll call them whatever we want to call them and you can call your countries sorry *** excuse for sports whatever you want to call them.
