yes it will know based on smell (of nest and food source), but when the ant goes back to the nest, it will give what it thinks is the right info to other ants, but those other ants without stilts trying to find the food source will go toward it, but fall short of where they have to go.

I read about an experiment about this. They cut off the legs to make them shorter instead of using stilts.
The ants could not find their way back, after their legs had bean cut, so they saw that as evidence that ants find their way by counting steps.
edit. Ants don't use scent trails to find their way back. They will choose the shortest way back even if they have walked around in circles, looking for something.

Yes, because ants communicate by antennae and scent trails and since ants are industrious, probably would chew off the stilts anyway.
