(5/4)x + 1/2 = x - (1/2)

Put all x terms on one side of the equal sign and all constants on the other.
(5/4)x - x = (-1/2) - (1/2)

Get 1x by dividing both sides by the coefficient of x (i.e. (1/4))
(1/4)x = -1
x = (-1)/(1/4)

x = -4

Good luck!

5/4 (x) + 1/2 = x - 1/2

get all x's on one side:

5/4 x - x = -1/2 - 1/2

convert so x's are the same denominator:

5/4 x - 4/4 x = -1

1/4 x = -1

x = -4

check: 5(-4)/4 + 1/2 = (-4) - 1/2

-5 + 1/2 = -4 1/2

-4 1/2 = -4 1/2

tada!

Given 5x/4 + 1/2 = x - 1/2
Therefore, 5x/4 = x - 1/2 - 1/2
= x - (1/2 + 1/2) = x - 1
Therefore, 5x/4 + x = -1
Or, x - 5x/4 = 1
That is, (4x - 5x)/4 = 1
That is, 4x - 5x = 4
That is, -x = 4 Or x = -4

5x/4 + 1/2 = x - 1/2
5x/4+1/2-x/1+1/2 =0
5x+1(2)-x(4)+1(2)=0
5x+2-4x+2 =0
5x-4x =-2-2
x =-4
