I was never a discus thrower (I was a pole vaulter and a sprinter), but since the team I was on was close, I picked up some tips. You'll probably want to hit the gym quite a bit to build a good upper body! This will help out a lot to get good strength behind the throw. There are a lot of drills you can do to get to help you on your spin and release. You'll want to practice releasing the disc at a 45 degree angle as that will give you the furthest distance. I'd recommend starting with a light disc and then slowing moving up in the weight. You can probably find a lot of the drills doing a search online. After that..its just practice practice practice. Don't worry if the disk wobbles in the air and such at first. That is usually typical. Just keep at it and once you get the hang of it and release it with the proper grip, it will sail right out of your hands nice and smooth. Just keep practicing. Good luck!

my high school team routinely had guys qualify for state in discus. Strength is a huge plus, but technique is the real key. We had a good coach that could teach technique to anyone.

So if you want to focus on discus, make sure you hit the weights. Going out for football and wrestling involve working those muscle groups too. But most importantly, find a coach (preferably) or a book/website that explains the technique. Learn and practice proper footwork.

Good luck with it, i was always afraid i would throw it the wrong way.
