I will answer this as a PhD candidate. If you follow only a scientific path, it will take more time to reach the technology. Unfortunately, science today is still done for the sake of science and a little for the sake of technology. But technology is found mostly by trial and error which is Edison's way or by chance. We need a lot of time to understand why things happen and create a new technology, instead people do some science than start trial and error, find a new technology and then try to understand how and it works.

technology is the progression of science, in most cases. technology can oocur with little or no science at all. technically speaking, those in the early days such as the iron age and even the caveman age had no access to science and didn't even know what it was. although they were performing that baisc fundamentals of science, for the most part, their ingeniuity lead to the fashioning of new tools and materials never seen before. so technology can be simply the progression of science even if there is no concrete scientific methods employed

science is the learning and discovering and developing of technologies that bring about new challenges and discoveries that gives new technologies, as examples the discovery of the atom and the sad or good uses that have been developed, or first we walked, then horses, then horse and buggy, then steam engines and so forth as progress continues to follow science always faster. Comps used to be new every couple years, now every six months. A Long answer, but I hope it helped. :)
