....We keep getting these letters in the mail about potential winnings for a sweepstakes, and that our numbers have been drawn by computor for so much money. Do you know anybody that has won anything like this thru the mail? Are they for real? It would be nice. We hold on to the hope that someday we'll be ok financially, so we enter into them.

throw them away.....I am sure that they are not making illegal claims, but they are not telling you about all of the suckers that got ripped off for every one person that gained

No, they're all scams. If you haven't bought a ticket for a lottery or submitted an entry you can't win.

If you've actually entered into a sweepstakes online through somebody you know is for real (like a magazine), and they contact you, that's something different. They generally notify you through the mail and/or by phone to verify you - never by email.
