My father is a die hard planner for disaster! There are quite a few of us(children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren) and he prepares for all of us. Stocks of canned goods, water supplies, lanterns, flashlights, batteries, etc. we use products to keep them from expiring then he re-stocks. Freezer full of fish and other game..and I find a few emergency things around the house comes in handy during electrical storms when the lights go out.

Living on an island in the Gulf of Mexico, we have to always be prepared for hurricanes, tropical storms and even squalls that blow up with wind gusts of above hurricane strength. We keep flashlights , radio and TV (portable small) and the batteries with plenty of extras to fit all of these. Generator, plenty of gas cans, ice chests, portable Coleman stove and lanterns plus the gas to go with them, and of course a window unit 110 volt air conditioner because it gets REALLY hot here. Back up ice in the freezer to put in the ice chests, too. Always have plenty of drinking water on hand and easily prepared foods in cans and MREs. Also. we are without water as well as power for long periods of time after the bad storms and so we fill the bathtubs with water for flushing the toilets. Be sure to charge up our cell phones (when they come back on) and have all prescription meds filled up. The pharmacist will pre-fill most medications in the face of a storm.

a nice basement to hide from tornados, and a generator to run furnace and fridge. If the house didn't get blown away, and it's a different kind of disaster, the water heater has 40 gallons of fresh water with a little faucet at the bottom to get to it.
