The roots of Humankind came from Africa ( Scientists are saying and have proved to some extent that all humans descended from the SAN Tribe of Africa ( Kalahari). If there was no Africa you would not have been asking such a question or reading this answer. Only because your skin is white ( or whatever color it is) you think Africa has not contributed significantly to world development.

Africa has so it contributed alot of music. If there had been no Africa you can say bye bye to reggae rap and probably every other music category of music you can think of. Are you forgetting Egypt is also a part of Africa, Egypt contributed sooo much including the building of structures, farming techniques and jobs for geologists. There are many more contributions that Africa and its people have given to this sad world. It takes only a few minutes to truly appreciate Africa and its people for the many contributions that they have contributed.

You must think of two perceptions when dealing with this question. the western suppression of African people, due to slavery which is still existant, the exploitation of the diamond, silver and gold mines as well as the poor trading agreement on raw materials such as sugar, wood, rubber and oil. Then look at people such as Kofi Annan, Nelson Mandela, Femi Kuti
Unfortunalty most people forget the Egypt is an African nation. the ancient egyptians contributed to nearly every scientific invention known to man, created detailed records on many a varied thing, with advancements in social, economic, agricultural, architectural and medical breakthroughs.

Depends on what you qualify as "contributions";
1/ During the colonial period, Africa was a source of raw materials to produce goods for use in Europe. A significant amount of resources was exported out of the country. As a result, the British empire, for example, grew significantly.
2/ During Trans-Atlanatic slave tarde, Africa was the major source of "free" labor used in the colonies i.e. the America's and the Carribean until the abolition of the slave trade. As a result, the economies in the colonies grew siginificantly.
3/ In current economic times, Africa has become a big "testing and dumping" ground for European pharmaceutical products. As a result, the cost of destroying unused/unapproved drugs has reduced for many companies thus increasing their bottom lines.

think about it like this...during what time period?
now? The continent is looked at by the US media as an AIDS infested cess pool full of corruption, famine, and muslim extremists
Sure South africa seems decent but lets not forget about apartheid and AIDS
but if we go back in time to the egyptian civilization you'd find things were different. There were monumental feats of engineering and great places of learning taking place. These ideas were propagated through the world. They even helped propagate the arabic numeral system which was brought to Europe by Fibbonacci and was found to be much more convenient than roman numerals (multiply VII by XVI and you'll see what I mean)
Africa has it's good points now but it could stand to get it's ducks in a row. I think modern civilization in many cases has been a burden, leading to things like more people being able to live on land than the land can support, enter bad weather and you'e got a major famine. In addition to that when people become on products vs the self sustaining herding, farming and hunting life styles that they'd known for so long and that worked in such a manner so as to be a sustainable and you get trouble.
Africa has plenty of resources but with the resources obviously come the chances to make money, with that comes greed and ower struggle, with that come armed thugs, armies attacking their own countrymen and o on and so forth. One need only look at any of a myriad of african countries which have fallen into civil war over the past 30 years, the massive human rights violations of warlords, or the out right anarchy of Mogadishu to see whats happeneing.
If the UN could fix anything Africa might be a good start. And I'm not talking about any scams to line UN members pockets. Im talking about training, and the set ups of stable governments
Africa's modern contributions to world development these days would probably considered to be more in the arts and sports arenas...plenty of good runners and soccer players come out of there to say nothing of the SA Rugby teams. And the music is a major influenmce throughout the west, listen to anything from Sade to DMB and you'll catch nuances of African influence

Untrue...
Many African countries have been stripped of their resources and these resources have been used to help other countries develop. In the past and currently, western countries have taken valuble resources such as diamonds, gold, ivory and even Africas people. So in a very sad and brutal way, Africa has contributed greatly.

Define Africa. The whole continent? Yes, Algerians were tracking the movement of the stars and doing Algebra, when Germans were painting their faces blue and worshiping oak trees. Egyptians had invented embalming before man set foot on the British Isles, they also invented beer. Now there you go. And bread. Deep Africa? No not much, but then why have a road when you do not have to go anywhere to shop? Why have air/conditioning when it is not that uncomfortable. Why have TV when you have nature. Why have buildings when trees are excellent shelter. Be very careful about generalizing, especially when it comes to countries and races. Many people are very touchy about it.

When you say "africa" do you mean ALL of Africa or just parts of it.?
Other than for the oil n Algeria and Lybia and the diamond mines in South Africe, I can't think of anything Africa has done to contribute to the world's development...

Erm... Egypt is in Africa. You've heard of the ancient Egyptians havent you? Tunisa is in Africa. Have you heard of Carthage? Their problems are due to the great British Empire and all the other Europeans plundering for their own gain. The worse were the missionaries who had a problem with how they were living and proceeded to clothe them.
