including the so called "founders" of metal who is the best ever?

Until I heard their self-titled album, I would have said Metallica.
Until I heard 10,000 Days, I would have said Tool.
Until I heard them without Ozzy, I would have said Black Sabbath.
Today, there's only one heavy metal band that has stayed consistantly good (unlike Slayer) without becoming stagnant (like Korn). Every one of this band's albums are excellent, and they always play a great live show complete with improvisation (an art form that is lost on every other metal band). That band is Clutch.

It´s hard to say which band is the best, because there are lots of bands which could be the best, it depends on the point of view you are analyzing them, for example we could make an analysis based on speed, guitar riffs, lyrical themes, voice quality, drumming, general skills, inspiration that provokes in other bands, longevity, # of albums released, the sensations you experiment when you listen to them, etc. etc. etc.

But mixing a little bit of all that characteristics I could say:

70's : Black Sabbath
80's : Metallica and Slayer
90's : Cannibal Corpse

As I said before it´s hard to mention just 2 or 3 but these are some of my beeeeest. Please take into account also that I like extreme metal... obviously a guy or girl who is into heavy, industrial, goth, etc. will have a different opinion.

Greatest? I can't really say. Probably Black Sabbath.

Other than them, I would have to say Slayer, Iron Maiden, Metallica (Master of Puppets is their best album whether you want to admit it or not), and Led Zeppelin (as founders of heavy metal).

Greatest and metal in the same sentence? Contradiction in terms. Mutually exclusive.

duh...Metallica, and im not even a fan!!

the only song i REALLY like from them is "Nothing Else Matters" and 1 or 2 others, but in general they are not my type

but i respect the impact they had on Rock music, then and today

and so many of my Fave bands are influenced by them!!

PS, Guns N Roses were not that great either, they had a few classics, and thats it! but SLASH is the GREATEST guitarist EVER!!!
