I guess I just want to know does this affect other parts of the car that will eventually make it unsafe or does it ONLY affect the Air Conditioning (and in a way that is not dangerous)?

Ok on the front of the air compressor is a idler pulley. The belt turns the pulley weather the air is on or not. If this pulley locks up and does not turn when the engine is running, it will lock up the belt and cause all the other pulleys not to turn. This means the belt is turning things like the power steering pump, the water pump ( in some cases) the alternator will not charge the battery.

Now on the other hand if this pulley is turning but when you turn on the air it is not, then you can run the car, just don't turn on the air. Replacing the compressor can be costly, So if you want it replace it will cost between 300-700 for the compressor, the freon, and the labor to make it work again.

Hope this answers your question and helps in some way

Glad to see someone else already posted about the dangers of a seized a/c compressor so I won't go there.

In the past I have dealt with Hancock Industries for replacement compressors and compressor clutches. You might want to check with them as their prices seemed to be fair.

If only affects the Air.
As long as the windows still go down, you should be okay... warm maybe, but okay
