Which is bad because they are eating the fish and frogs, nut anyway, I was standing on the dock oneday and this turtle jumps up from the pond and tries to bite me! Pretty scary!

At best a snapping turtle can lunge, but jump and attack something, well that is just nonsense especially if this is a full grown alligator snapping turtle which can weigh upwards of 200 pounds. To put it simply, the physiology of turtles and tortoises is such that they were designed to neither run nor jump.

I've lived in Louisiana for thirty years. I'm a sportsman and I run the creek banks fishing all the time. I've seen more snapping turtles than you can imagine but I've never seen one leap out of the water to bite something nor have I ever heard of anyone who has. I believe that's an old wives tale. Those turtles weigh a lot!

Papa used to have a three legged dog. One of them jumping snappers got him and the dog had to chew off his own leg to excape certain death. I aint seen them myself, but papa said they didn't really jump so much as fall out of the trees. Still gives me the willies. Good luck.
