I am looking to get my boss and the owner of my company a thank you gift, but I have no idea where to start and what would be appropriate. Any suggestion on good places to start?

Get your boss a nice large houseplant that can be displayed in his office and can be cared for by his secretary, or flowers or gift basket of fruits, crackers and cheeses. Go to your local florist, they can help you with a lot of creative ideas.

See what your boss is interested in lets say they are the corporate golf type get a gift cert to their fav. local golf course. Also if they are into sports try to get a ticket or two to an event. You can also get two nice vouchers for dinner at a really nice place so they may take there spouses out for a night "on you" as a thank you. Be creative as it will stick in there minds more than the norm.

Generally, it's considered improper business etiquette to "gift up", meaning that an employee really shouldn't be buying gifts for her superiors. A simple well written "thank you" would probably be more appropriate than an actual bought gift. Buying a gift for them puts your boss and the owner in an awkward position, and to your co-workers, it may look like your a "brown nose". Stick with the thank you note and move on.

Bottle of nice wine or liquor if they drink
Something to do with a favorite sports team or driver
Play golf? Look at golfing stores or websites
Take them to lunch
Nice frame for their desk

potted plant

food type gift baskets always work well, a selection of nice cookies, chocolates, or a specialty coffee basket is what i usually get. the recipient can share with the office or elect to take it home.

that place called 'http://www.thingsremembered.com/' has a bunch of sappy engravable stuff. i have recieved quite a few things from there and i really like them all, i have never had an employee go wrong with that. and if you don't know what to write, just put his/her name on it. i have clocks and all kinds of stuff...
