I've uploaded the pdf to my host, and created a hyperlink to it, but when I click the hyperlink all i get is the "page cannot be found" screen. Do I need to use some fancy html mumbo jumbo?

Save the pdf as a .jpg and insert it as a picture on a page.
Or if you just post a link to the file of the pdf on your server, the link will open the pdf on that persons computer who clicks on it.

Do you have adobe reader? I know I was having problems opening PDF files at first because I needed to download reader... just a guess, good luck!
