It is.......I like to refer to that movie as an Acid Trip for kids. The caterpiller sitting on the mushroom is smoking pot, hash or something. Full of drugs.

The caterpillar is smoking opium, but I can't say it's all about drugs. It's a story that contains a lot of crazy stuff, including the Mad Hatter. In those days people who made hats often suffered from chronic mercury poisoning. It's a crazy story full of crazy stuff including drugs.
People can find a drug motif where there absolutely isn't one. Way back when, Peter Paul and Mary came out with a song called "Puff the Magic Dragon." Several years later, when marijuana became popular, people started saying the song was about pot, which was nonsense. Some years later the Beatles had a song called "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." It was crazy in the same sort of way as "Alice in Wonderland," and with the initials LSD, everybody knew it was about drugs, but everybody was wrong. It was inspired by a child's drawing and the initials LSD were unintentional.

the movie/book isn't on drugs, but i bet the writers were. sounds like one fun acid trip to me though.... if only we had what they were using (life would be interesting). Although some people say that the book is an allusion to politics at the time... i don't know, i wasn't a litt. major.

Personally I think that it is just a cute children's movie with a lot of imagination.
No more then that.
You have to think of the times when it was made in.
