my uncle has a toyota 4runner that's like 2001 or something and it comes with an air vent on the hood. i checked it out and his car isnt turbo charged or anything, the air just blows on the engine and helps keep it cool.
i was wondering, wouldnt the excess dust and water would hurt the engine instead of helping it?

this is because i want to change my hood to something similar to his too, for the look and so my engine can stay cooler.

it is ok do have dust and air and water hit your engine nothing bad will happen only time sumthing bad would happen was if the water and the dust got into the inside of your engine now that is an extremely slim chance in fact i dont think it would happen at all because engines are sealed up very tight

The air vents are strictly for cosmetic purposes. Originally air "scoops" were used in cars with carbs, which forced air into the manifolds, aiding in performance. Since today's cars have fule injection, they are not needed.
The air and water will not damage your engine.

Nope - if you look at how the vent is postioned you will notice that it's not directly over any major component that would be affected by dripping water or dirt.
