School supplies are required, but most schools will buy for a child that can't afford them

School is not free. It is paid for through your taxes. Schools can barely afford the supplies they have now because of budget cuts. They cannot spare that extra to buy/supply all the extra for all of the students. You must have your supplies to be able to do your schoolwork. Believe it or not, it's almost impossible to get anywhere in life unless you have a college degree. Nobody cares how intelligent you really are, they just want to know if you've got your piece of paper yet.

The learning process is free. In order to study and learn properly you need school supplies to implement your studies. It is optional but highly recommended. You don't have to spend a lot of money - check out sales and used items.

Basics are required. I don't know why teachers call for things like a certain brand of very expensive calculator. In those cases, there are charities and local supply drives that help out.

Basics don't cost that much. Notebooks are .10 at Walmart. So are crayons and glue sticks are .20. Pencils are cheap as well. What you LET your KIDS talk you into buying for them is totally up to you and the school should not be held responsible for that. If you want to fuss about something, I'd choose clothes. It is so expensive these days to keep your kid in clothing to go to school!

School isn't free. You have to pay book rental. Many churches give away free school supplies.
