You shouldn't punch anyone! You have no right to punch anyone! Its called assault and you end up being charged with it and paying the price (or more likely your parents do) and then this mean girl just laughs at you for the trouble she caused you to get yourself in to...do you really want to provide her with that kind of entertainment? Besides punching her won't change anything anyway, she'll still be the same mean awful person that she has always been. You could report her to the officials at your school because the girl needs some psychological help and these days they don't take that so lightly. They will contact her parents and try to figure out whats wrong with her.
Why do you let this girl bother you? Anything that anyone says is about their issues, the garbadge in their head and not YOU or anybody else. They more than likely, don't even know YOU. It doesn't change who you are inside so what does it really mean...nothing at all. People like this do what they do for the pay off they get out of it, and that is other peoples reactions to it. Its what they get off on, so if you don't want to encourage her have no reaction, except to maybe laugh at how sad and pathetic she is. You dont change at all, unless you allow this crap to change you and thats just about making a decision.
You said yourself she is just a mean girl, as such she will have a lonely, ugly, hateful life and nobody will want anything to do with her long term. Maybe in high school there will be a few wharped people that think its cool, watch and see though, first only the same couple of people will put up with her, and eventually will desert her too and trust me in the real world nobody will tolerate her crap, she'll have no friends, no job, no husband (at least not one that will stick around).

The answer depends on your goal. Do you want to become mean? By practicing meanness in return for meanness, you communicate that Marlie is your teacher.
However, if you want to be about love, kindness, and positive results, then teach her how not to be mean. It takes a little more energy than just imitating her, but you'll evolve (grow) from the effort. For example, tell her, "Marlie, your behavior is mean and it makes me feel like hitting you. I could never be friends with someone who is so mean." Now, you've added love to the situation and stirred it around causing her to have a deficit (something she doesn't have) that will somewhere inside make her want to be the kind of person you would want for a friend--even if she never admits it!
Having said that, you don't have to let her be mean to you. Stay away from her. Do what you can to take away her power to be mean (expose her, etc.), but maintain good boundaries!
