The man is obviously an idiot and will need a list to guide him through his day. The list should be simple enough for an idiot to read. Give him one room, all the dishes, and the yard to do everyday. When he won't even do that then I suggest that she put insurance on him and have him taken care of.

Well first of all, you have to evaluate the benefits of him working and her working - that is to say the cost of child care. I assume you are asking about getting him to cook and clean and other such house chores.
It is definitely complicated, and if she left, even with the courts deciding in her favor and all, he already doesn't sound like the type to pay up what he would owe.
The cooking part I might be able to help. Help your sister out, by cooking for her - just her. Let me try to explain it better: he obviously has to cook, or at least microwave, something while watching the kids. He then waits for your sister to cook for him I assume. Well, if she was constantly coming home and saying that she wasn't hungry (cause she had eaten anywhere else) then he would have to cook for himself. Then if there are leftovers, she makes sure to take them for her meal the next day. It will get him in the kitchen somewhat - which could lead to more. Here's hoping.
The cleaning is difficult as well since you can't let it get out of hand with the children there - you'd lose them if it got bad enough.
I agree that leaving would be complicated, but I would have to say that it would have to be considered. Though he might be a real pain about it, more than likely, your sister would get the house, alimony, and child support. The hard part is finding a better reason than 'irreconcilable differences.'
Perhaps finding a divorce lawyer that offers a free consultation (I know she works a lot, but it sounds like it might be worth it).
Hope this helps.

Well, she's spoiled him royally, hasn't she? I used to have a brother-in-law just like this. His wife eventually went to her day job and let the rest of it go. When he and the kids ran out of clothes he finally got off his dead a** and did the laundry. When there were no longer dishes to eat from he did dishes. When he couldn't find the sofa because of clutter he put things away. She's been the breadwinner and he the house husband for about 14 years now. I guess it works for them. It took him about 6 months to figure it all out, and it's still not the cleanest house on the block, but she doesn't have to kill herself anymore and they seem happy enough. Besides...even though it IS your sister and you love her...It's not your problem and she'll probably only get angry if you give her suggestions about leaving him.

It really isn't your business, dear one. Your sister made her bed and it is her business to take care of her children and herself. Do your best to support her all you can, and give copious amounts of love to your neices/nephews. And when she is ready to leave, help her all you can. She needs you, but don't rag on her. Love her.

your sister's choice.
you are outraged but did your sister complain? what does your bro-in-law do? does he got a job somewhere?
ultimately your sister should decide whether this 'slavery' is worth it ? if she do not have a complaint , it is better you left things as they are. let her decide. preferably without your open active role.

Butt out, let your sister deal with her own problems. She dealt this deck, she should play them out.
