Practiced as a social custom in parts of africa and supported by the Sunnah (the words and actions of the Prophet Mohammed).
should we support the 'right' of indigenous african people to practice FGM? how about when they are immigrants into first world nations?

It's called FGM, rather than female circumcision, because there are various methods practised which may involve cutting the labia, the clitoris, the clitoris hood. Male circumcision is a known procedure which only affects the foreskin (i am also against that, btw)

It's assault, as is male circumcision.

The fact that it removes any pleasure a woman can have from sex is doubly cruel.

I consider myself a fair person. So here is where I stand: I would support FGM if there was also an equivalent MGM where the part of a man's genitals that gave the most pleasure was removed so that he could be a good and faithful husband and not give his wife AIDS or another STD, which is quite prevalent in the regions that practice FGM.

Don't you think the West has become too involved in Africa?. Why don't we let them get on with their lives and stop trying to instill our ways and views on theirs. The African people have been on this Earth longer than us white people, so let the elder race be. If they emigrate to the west, then they should take on the moral values of the country they move to, because that is the reason they emigrate, to get away from their own national customs and laws.

well FGM is being practiced in the first world, it has been practiced in America- as a solution to girls masturbating (just like why we circumsize boys).... don't worry- its not something thats happening alot here- but it does happen alot both in African and Muslim culture.

While I agree that its not a practice that I would like to undergo and I feel that its something that ultimately should be eliminated we should not impose our views on other cultures. Therefore, in order to stop this practice we need to educate women and men in these cultures about the dangers of FGM.. working to change the ideology of the practice before we go about banning this....

Actually I believe the the British Government tried to ban it in one of their African colonies at one point. the result was that thousands of women marched directly into their circumcisions- merely to make a point- I'm going to stick with my views about women's rights- "keep your laws off my body!"

I notice then when people talk about female circumcision, they call it Female Genital Mutilation, but when they talk about the mutilation of a males genitals they call it Circumcision as if that makes it sound better. But I digress.

My answerer is a question:

Should we allow ANY genital mutilation, male or female.

It is apparently practised in England by immigrants from certain African countries in secret !

I can't see how anybody with knowledge outside a little isolated tribe could even consider it. male genital mutilation is pointless as well, although it is hugely less destructive.

I can't find any possible positive reason for doing something like this. They need to be brought up to speed and educated as to why this isn't a good thing.

I don't know too much about that topic.
I know that they were forced sterilizations in Peru. They were approved by dictator Fujimori in the 90s.
