dont be overwelmed with all these answers on here. you need to find someone who has horses,or a stable or ranch and have them show you some basic things it depends on what you are going to be doing with the horse, just make sure you get the proper gear. people will try to go to extremes with it ,telling you need this and that. when all you need is basic stuff if you are just pleasure riding.. also you can check with your tack store and they will show you things you can get,,,saddle, pad, halter, bridle, bit, reins,,if you are caring for the horse yourself you can worm him and get his shots at any tack store and have someone show you how to do it, a vet does not need to be called for every little thing.if you have any questions you can email me at desertbaby@frontiernet.net

If you have to ask that question the first thing you should get is the name of a good ridding instructor in your area.
if you do not know what you need then you do not know how to use it.
this in turn may lead to injury to you but worse to the horse.
there have been to many times i have seen horses with saddle sores, bit cuts, and broken teeth because someone did not know how to tack up a horse right.
a good instructor will also train you on how to keep a horse, there is a lot more to having a horse than throwing it hay twice a day,
on the good side horse can be great friends and a joy to have around.
when i have had a bad day my horses will always make me feel better.
so for your sake and the horses please learn how to ride him/her and how to take care of them.

To start off with :) (There will be way more later! He He!)
2 Halters (in case one breaks you have a back up), lead rope, bridle (make sure you know the size of your horses head, ex: mini, pony, cob, horse, warmblood or draft), saddle (most places will let you take a saddle home to size it to your horse with a credit card number down), saddle pad, fly mask, hoof pick, curry comb, and hard brush. And I always worm my new horses when they get here so grab a tube of wormer. :)
Oh and an equine first aid kit! Very handy!

What I had to buy later because my horses are clipped and have special needs was:
Winter turn out blanket, stable blankets, fly sheets, polo wraps, medicine boots, jump boots, bell boots, chain lead, lunge line, lunge whip, etc.... No wonder my hubby gets upset! :)

Hope this helps or at least brings a smile to your face.
Have fun with your new baby! (the horsey!)

It depends on what you plan on doing with your horse. If it is simply a pleasure horse to ride then the basics would be a saddle, saddle blanket, briday, halter, lead rope, grooming brush, hoof pick, fly spray......

Other things may be necessary depending on injuries or issues of that irk. If you plan on taking your horse to other places to show and or ride you would also need a trailer.

Wow, if you're getting a horse and don't know the answer to that question, you're in for a big surprise.

In addition to hay, grain and nutritional supplements, you will need tack (halter, saddle, bridle, girth, lead ropes, etc) if you plan on riding it, blankets to protect against weather. And that's just the start of the list. You'll need a good vet and a farrier (for shoes).

check out this page for starters. http://horses.about.com/od/buyingyourfirsthorse/f/basequip.htm

Depending on where you are keeping your horse and what you are buying him for (recreation/show) will influence certain factors. You have to consider what kind of bedding you will use for your horse, water buckets (i would suggest the ones you can plug in during the winter so water doesn't freeze),feed buckets, some type of bin for feed storage (trust me you don't want to leave it out in the bags mice will find a way in it), if your horse will be turned out you'll need a way to keep water outside for him/her also i wouldn't suggest just a bucket bc they can easily be knocked over, winter blankets, maybe a lighter blanket, fly spray (where im from ive seen some really bad bites they can cause your horse to get bumps/welts on their skin), pitch fork, shovel, muck buckets or a wheel barrow to clean out stalls, halters, lead ropes, saddle, saddle blankets, bridle, bits, bit guards, hoof pick, brushes, feed, and hay to get started. If you'll be doing any travelling you may want to invest in leg wraps to keep their legs from gettin cut up or anything in the trailer. Invest in a good pair of clippers too. If you'll be clipping (shaving) their ears or anything the expensive pair of clippers will be worth it. Don't buy a pair in the store they wear too easily. Congrats and good luck!

If you don't know the answer to that question, you need a lot more education before you get a horse. It's not like getting a hamster.
