Not long after my dad passed two years ago, it was discovered he had some property. It was sold, and the money left is to be divided between my half-sister, stepmother and I. However, my half-sister argued about the amount not being enough, so stepmom told her lawyer to put the matter through probate. My stepmother hasn't said much about progress on the matter since that time, and I'm wondering what is the problem. Since my half-sister has been harassing her since before Dad passed and afterwards, I would think my stepmom would want to lean more on her lawyer to settle things and permanently get her off her back. Unlike my half-sister, I do work for a living, so I'm not desperate for the money. However, I have a few bills that the funds would pay off completely. I don't want to bug my stepmother constantly about this, but it seems that two years is long enough to settle Dad's estate. It is not like he was a millionaire.

Considering your Dad intestate (no will), you, as the blood child, should have the entire amount - probate or not. Contact the attorney yourself and don't rely on people who are as unscrupulous as your step-family to tell you anything, least of all, the truth. You carry more rights than either of them and you should make yourself heard to the attorney - then maybe YOU can dole out the estate! It's not a matter of whether or not you need the money, it's the greed of people who don't legally deserve to be in charge handling your money!

My Uncle died and left me with one million dollars worth of property and houses in Puertorico. I have never met him, seen him or even talk to him. The family is upset that I was chosen for the inheritance. To this day, I have left everything as is. The homes my cousins live in is free of rent. I pay the property taxes and I will leave the entire estate divided between relatives when I die. I recieved no money...just property and I have battled on taxes ever since then, but have only sold the raw poperty to pay taxes and the family wants the houses since they have lived in them for years. I said no, they live in them for free, but thats it.
