Although house sparrow numbers are suposed to be dropping in the UK, our sparrow population has increased thanks to regular feeding. We now have quite a large colony. But they will keep pecking off the flowers from our runner beans and we have only picked about four or five beans this year. We love the sparrows antics and wish them no harm but - - - - ! Can anyone help, please ?

I am not about to harm the sparrows. My cats are trained not to catch birds. Runner beans are too high for row covers. (8ft) No useful answers so far.

I bought netting from Burpee Seed's catalog and stung it up on bamboo to keep birds of my english peas and figs.

Garden row covers should do the trick. They'll allow sunlight, air and rain to penetrate but the birdies will be out of luck.

That's a good one--my dogs pretty much chase the birds away from my beans...what about some aluminum foil pans on strings on tall sticks (?)
