file for unemployment - and cruise for a while. chance are they were trying to find a "good" way to get rid of you and they are using your last absense as the "reason." usually the feeling is mutual - so you are probably over them anyway. if you are at the top of the UE pay scale you can make enough to live on while you regroup. i doubt if you can sue them for dismissing you. like someone else said - they are allowed to fire you for any reason (unless it is discriminatory) just as you are allowed to leave for any reason. to get UE you just need to prove that you didn't voluntarily leave or that you didn't get fired for doing something "bad."
this may be the mini-vacation you were hoping for... good luck

Wow, if you have been ill, and you have Dr.'s note. That should be enough! I guess it could depend on what state you are in. I am in California. Or how long you were ill, and when you notified your employer. You can apply for unemployment from here, if your ex-employer challenges you, challenge right back. Call you labor board to see if they can actually let you go, and did they have your paycheck waiting for you too?

Well you can take him to a tribunal for unfair dismissal, I reckon you've got a good case there! Go to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau and ask them for the relevant contacts.

If you've been with the firm for two years or more you can make a claim for unfair dismissal, less than that and probably not, but you should be able to do something. CAB.

You are probably an "employee at will" unless you have some sort of contract, which means you can be terminated at any time. However, you may be able to collect unemployment. You should talk to the folks at the unemployment office.

Have you been off work a lot? If not a tribunal sounds the right route.
