Because it allows for optimal spacing of the jumps. If you squeezed it into 100m, you wouldn't get properly full strides in-between.

For the first hurdles races in England around 1830, wooden barriers were placed along a stretch of 100 yards. The first standards were attempted in 1864 in Oxford and Cambridge: The length of the course was set to 120 yards (109.72 meters) and over its course runners were required to clear ten 3½ feet (1.067m) high hurdles. After the length of hurdles races was rounded up to 110 meters in France from 1888 on, the standards were pretty much complete except for Germany where hurdles of 1 meter height were used until 1907.

ooo i know(im in track) the guys also have 100 M hurdles, the start is closer to the hurdles, womens hurdles are at 110 M so the have 10 more M to start with, men have longer strides and dont need the extra 10 M, they usually finish faster than women either way(sry its just the way it is!!) women take a lil more time to get going

Because even though the hurdles is essentially a sprint you need that little bit extra space for hurdles.

because is a different event, sprinters usually run faster, hurdlers are more agile. I ran 400 hurdles and felt great. I also ran 400 relay and 400.trust me they are very different. sprinters always beat me at 400 but I kicked butt in hurdles. I could definetly keep up during relay was always second leg but enjoy hurdles much better, it putted me in the ZONE.
