Do you think it's better to inquire about a job opening and handing in a CV in person by going directly to a company or is it better to hand it in online?

Both, really. Many companies do intial applications online...better for both of you. However, some companies like the old fashioned way....in person.

In person, if possible. For many online job ads, you are a mere number--not a face ... it's very impersonal. Sometimes, you might not have a choice, but any time you can get a face-to-face interview, your chances go up tremendously. Many companies constantly publish online ads, even when they're not really hiring. This is so they have a constant supply of resumes. So don't be surprised if you never hear back from many of them.

I will tell you how I got my current teaching job: I went to the school's web site, but there were no openings. So I contacted (via email) the head of the English department.I explained my skills, my education, and my specialty areas. I attached my resume. He emailed back the next day and I ended up getting hired. So don't be afraid to be a bit aggressive. : )

I think the strategy for how to apply largely depends upon the company and the industry culture. It would make virtually no difference applying on line or in person to a company that contracts it's HR out and uses Resume Scanning to create a short list of candidates.. But in a more service oriented office environment-- retail, healthcare, customer service, etc where the hiring is done by the company directly, applyling in person DOES make a difference because they get to see you and your potential sooner and more directly.

Good luck! Remembering that whether you choose online or in person, it is you and your skills that get jobs more than the vehicle you choose to get the interview. :D

Like someone else said, it really depends on the company. My suggestion would be to apply online (if the company uses a resume scanner, your resume will be scanned and in their system quickly), and then follow up with an express mailer including your cover letter, and CV. You may have to call the company to find out who to direct the mailer to (this would also be the person to address your cover letter to). This, in my opinion, would be the most professional approach. I would not just show up somewhere, as this would be unexpected and possibly disruptive.

I have been looking for a job for over a year. I think the internet is just a way for people to avoid talking to you.

Most of the time, there is no person to talk to, no contact number.

Unfortunately I am looking for a job out of town and that is the best way for me. If I was looking locally, I would definitely go for face contact.

Never apply on line.
Always go in person, just show up at the Human Resources Dept with a resume, well dressed.

I have to say face to face is best!
I can judge in the first 7 seconds your overall views on what sort of employee you will be for me!
if you just want a job then what ever but if you want a career choice or plan then face to face and sell yourself!
and not your soul!

depends on the company. most companies DO NOT want you to simply show up and drop off your resume. best bet is to call the HR/recruiting/hiring manager about the position and get the chance to introduce yourself to them. they will direct you to either visit their website and fill out the application or if it's possible for you to drop off your resume or fax it.

It is my experience that going in person is the advantage in small to medium sized businesses. however when you get to the larger businesses they prefer on-line and sometimes make it difficult to do anything personally.
