A major is a topic you choose as your main study focus. Your 4 years in college/university revolve around it. A minor is when you have about 6 courses in another topic. A mjor usually requires you to have about 18-20 credits.

For instance, my major is Psychology. I want to be a Psychologist one day, but I'm working on getting 6 credits in Child Psychology and Sociology so I can claim them as a minor. You can't really do anything with a minor, but it looks good on a resume. For instance I want to work with Children and Adolescence, a Psychology degree looks good, but it looks even better when it's paired with a minor in Child Psychology.

The MAJOR is your specialty field -- what your career will be based upon. The Minor should compliment that Major, but it does not require the same amount of courses as the Major would. That is the easiest way to say the answer to this question -- for Example: A Major would be accounting -- and a Minor would be in Math, some Hard Science, whatever -- that way, you could use that degree as a reference to become a cost estimator in some Technical Corporation that does Advanced Research.

A major is your actual degree program, meaning that whatever that course of study is will be what appears on your degree. A minor is a less intensive course study that does not earn an actual degree but can be used in much the same way.
