As far as I know, no laws exist anywhere requiring a wife's consent for the husbands vasectomy. What can happen is that there is one form to acknowledge receipt of counselling, and consent for the operation that both are asked to sign.

Although a husband does not need his wife's consent to have this surgery, it is appropriate for him to discuss his vasectomy with her beforehand.

No. A wife's consent should not be mandatory for a man to have a vasectomy. However, the man may wish to discuss the decision with his wife and family.

New Jersey says: Wife's signature is suggested, but not required.

I have heard that too. It is quite very reasonable too. I remember hearing that Audrey Hepburn was falling in love with William Holden almost as fast as he was falling for her (which was in a big way). She broke off the affair (he was married) when discovering he had a vasectomy--she wanted children. There are men who divorce women because the women cannot bear children (Henry VIII was the most famous of a large crowd). There are women who divorce men because the men cannot give them children. In some places women feel ashamed if they cannot have children, and to think their man purposely is depriving them would be double insult, especially if they had no say. Check the laws in your state, but whether it is legal is only part of the problem, if she hasn't agreed, laws or no laws, you are being greatly unfair to her.

I don't know if it is required by law here or not, but I do know that several of my friends have had doctors refuse to do the procedure unless the spouse signs a paper agreeing to it.

I don't know. Never heard that. I don't think it should be up to the wife whether or not he gets his stuff tied up. That's quite a big decision for HIM to have to get permission from HER...

I highly, highly, highly doub it. That raises a number of Constitutional issues. I can't say for sure b/c i am not familiar with any applicable state statutes. But, i would be willing to bet that is a load of bologna.
