it's kinda gross, the color of the umbilical cord, but i don't think people will mind as much if they know why it's that color. My doctor didn't tell me anything when i asked, besides what goes in and out, we all know that already. So i kinda need someone else to help grasp this question.
Thanx

The umbilical cord can range in color from pink to beige to green and even blue. It has a lot to do with how long the birth has taken, the condition of the placenta at the time its cut, how far along the baby is, fetal distress, etc.

Basically it's kind of like why your veins are greenish blue under your skin. The cells the cord are wrapped in are a fleshy color, causing the vein inside to appear blue as the blood is darker. The more time that is spent through labor and the older the placenta is, the more blue/green it is. I'm not sure if race has anything to do with it, but I'd wager skin pigment might also affect how the outside of the cord looks, thus tinting the blood vessels differently for each baby.

How old is your baby? Is the cord stump dry? Are you gently pulling it up each time you change the diaper and applying rubbing alcohol with a q-tip around the base where it connects to the skin? Does the baby have a fever? If the stump is damp you can use a blow dryer on low or cool to air dry it as it is important to keep it dry so it will heal quickly and not be an environment for bacteria to grow.

My daughters was blueish purple and was curly like a cork screw. It was weird looking. I was told it was curly like that because she turned so much. As far as being green, I think its normal, just depends on the baby and the mom.
