A friend of mine is really into penguins and I was hoping to find someone here in Phoenix that might have access to one so I could surprise her on her birthday to see one up close in person. Short of going to Sea World in San Diego, I might be out of luck but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I'm sorry, I couldn't find any places in Phoenix, but I did find a zoo that's within driving distance. There is a zoo called the "Wildlife World Zoo" in Littlefield Park (which is about a 45 minute drive from downtown Phoenix) that has real penguins - it might be closer or further to you than that, depending on where you live.
