A few preliminary remarks:
1) WebSITES don't rank in the search engines, rather webPAGES do. Most websites have numerous webpages, and each webpage has the potential to show up in the search results of the major search engines (i.e., Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.com).
2) Sites show up in the search engines after someone searches for a particular keyword (a keyword is a short, 2 - 5 word phrases -- also known as search terms). This means that what we really want to know is what do we have to do to help a particular webpage rank well in the search engine for a particular keyword phrase.
3) Not all webpages and keywords are equally valuable when it comes to ranking well in the search engine. Some keyword phrases are more popular than other keyword phrases, some less so. Some keyword phrases are more relevant to your product and services, some less so. It is important to clarify your goals for ranking well so that you can gain the maximum benefit from showing up in the search engine results.
4) Your ability to rank well in the search engines is determined by the QUALITY of the number of webPAGES which compete against your webPAGE, not by the QUANTITY of webPAGES competing against you and certainly not by the number of webSITES which compete against you (in other words, the fact that there may or may not be 750,000 aroma therapy sites means absolutely nothing with regards to whether or not you can rank well for the keywords which relate toy our products or services (see the tutorials referenced below for more information).
With that said, here is an article which summarizes the steps you need to take to rank well in the search engines: http://www.sembasics.com/sem-blog/the-se...
The site contains other articles which explain in-depth how to do each of the steps outlined in the article (those tutorials can be reached here: http://www.sembasics.com/sem-blog/search...
Here is a brief outline of the article:
1) Create a search engine friendly website (proper use of HTML code, good URLs, etc.). If the search engines can't process your site, you can't rank well, no matter what else you do -- your site will essentially be invisible to them.
2) Good keyword research -- find the words and phrases that your customers use to search for your products, organize those keywords according to popularity and competition.
3) Create web pages each of which is focused around 1 - 2 keywords.
4) Get high-quality links from related, high-quality sites which link directly to the appropriate web page. This is perhaps the most important part of ranking well in the search engine, although it's effectiveness is determined by how well you do the other steps in this process.
5) Track and analyze your optimization results so as to improve the effectiveness of your optiization campaign.

Yahoo ranks web sites by how relevant they are to a topic and how popular they appear.
To get a good listing, include keywords in the header of your web site (check an guide on HTML if you do not know how to do that) and then repeat those word frequently in the site itself. (Meaning if you say it is a site on Pokemon's, and then never mention them anywhere on the site, the site will never get a high rating because it does not appear to be relavent to the subject).
Also the more links Yahoo finds to your site, they more popular and important it appears. (And the more traffic you will get because there are more ways to find your site.) So get as many people as you can to link to your site.
(Also remember that it take 5-6 months for a site to get a ranking in Yahoo and the other major search engines, so be patient.)

Hi, I'll try and answer this one for you. Getting to the top of the search engine rankings is the dream of every website owner. Trouble is, only 10 people can be on the first page of results for each keyword. In the case of the word "mom" there are 2,740,000 web pages with that word in the title of the web page. In the case of "family", it's even more depressing, 19,300,000. And "kids" is 15,300,000. The reason why the currrent 10 websites are on the first page of Google's results for each of the keywords you mention is because of a combination of 2 factors. The first is 'on-page SEO'. On page SEO means that the keyword (mom, family, kids etc.), has been strategically placed throughout the web page so that the Google spider 'thinks' the page relates to the subject. The second factor is what Google refers to as 'PageRank'. A web page's PageRank improves when other webpages (that have a similar topic focus) link to it. So, the more pages that link to you, the better. And even better still, is to have pages with a high PageRank link to you. This second factor is sometimes called off-page SEO and is the more important of the 2. So, the reason why Microsoft is ranked first for 'MOM' is because the acronym MOM occurs frequently throughout the web page, millions of people link to the Microsoft page, and Microsoft itself has a 10/10 pagerank. It's very hard to compete with that. Despite this rather depressing news, It is still possible to rank highly for related terms that people search for frequently, where there are relatively few web pages that have been optimized for that keyword. For instance, instead of the word 'mom', what about 'moms friend'? There are only 227 websites with those 2 words in that order in them, and over 7000 queries a month that use that exact keyword phrase. You could easily rank well for that phrase as well as hundreds of others. There is no magic bullet for ranking well in the search engines. The SEO guys that will promise you a top ten listing, will only do so for key words such as the one I mention above. There's nothing clever in that. You can do it yourself for free. For a full run down on how to do it, plus how to obtain all the numbers I have used in this answer, please visit my website, which is accessible from my Dr DIY link. Hope this helps.

Build links for other sites to yours! I use an EZ program that finds good sites, send out an email invite to trade links and even builds the link pages.
Once you have other sites pointing at your site, rankings zoom up! I know, I did it and my Adsense income runs about $25 per day!
It takes time! But, it really works!
