Um..never?
I understand your desire to have him be able to protect himself but showing him not only where the gun is and how to use it is laying the groundwork for potential disaster. What would stop him from going to play with it when you're not looking, or when a pal comes over to play and he wants to show him the gun and accidentally shoots himself or the friend.
Then you not only have the death of a child or children on your conscious but probably also a law suit.
I recommend an alarm system and teaching him how to dial 911 before teaching him how to use a gun.
And if you MUST eventually teach him. I say 15 or 16 absolute minimum.
Just my 2 cents.
Also, why would your three year old ever be left alone in the first place?
And why did your child change gender from the first sentence to the second? Or are there 2 children.. ?

The age of three is way to young for a child to be learning how to shoot a firearm let alone handle one. I am a card carrying member of the NRA and have been brought up around guns. I however did not own my first gun until I was in my 20's and it was not until I had my son that I owned a hand gun. How come? I believe that you should not own a gun for protection unless you are willing to kill someone. In other words if your three year old daughter were to pull a gun on an intruder she better make sure she is going to kill him. Otherwise he will just take the gun away from her and shot her. Anyway that's my opinion.
From one gun owning mother to another,
My son is 8 and he just fired his first shotgun.

You are joking right? a three year old has no concept of responsibility, and how miss use of a gun could be very, very dangerous. The answer to this problem is never let her be alone. She should never be left alone. Take the gun away and keep as far away from her as you can. Don't start again until she is 8-10. Use some common sense.

How mature is your 3 year old? My dad taught my brothers and i how to shoot guns at around three. He required that we were able to learn gun safety before we could shoot them. We were taught that you never point a gun at a person. You never place with a gun and pretend to shoot. This even extended into toy guns. The only gun we were allowed to point at someone is a squirt gun. I haven't taught my kids how to shoot a gun but the only reason why is I don't own any at this point. I have taught my kids not to point guns at people the same as I was. You have got to be the one to make the right decision for you situation.

At 18 or 20. Seriously, 3 is too young. He might decide to play with it and shoot some random dude. I don't think he's responsible enough to know the dangers of using a gun.

a three year old should NEVER be left alone, and should NOT be learning to use a gun! I don't think that any age is the right age to teach a child to use a gun! Sell your guns and move to a better area!

In general I would say that 3 years old is both too young to know how to shoot a gun, too young to have access to a gun, and definitely too young to be left alone, especially in a bad area.

My mothers and fathers in no way had any guns because my Dad did not hunt. even with the undeniable fact that, they made particular that all of us knew some ordinary questions of safe practices about guns including in no way pointing them at everybody for any reason through the age of 8. maximum of my kinfolk hunt, so it would not be unusual to come across a gun at their homes. My state seems to have a reduce of 12 for searching as none of my kinfolk supply a gun to their newborn till then. so a ways as knives, i'd not supply one to a baby less than 9 or 10. in case you stay contained in the city, a pocket knife isn't all that mandatory, yet in case you stay contained in the country, you want all of it the danged time. also particular interests will require extremely good knives, yet i'd favor to supervise a youthful newborn. My Uncle were given shot contained in the foot through a school chum even as he became 14 because the college chum hadn't been taught to not contact issues that weren't his (he took my grandfather's rifle off its rack). There are purely multiple stupid injuries which will be prevented if human beings purely locked up guns in protect cabinets or closets. Too many stupid human beings contained in the international and childrens do purely not understand! keep in ideas persons. think ofyou've got administration over your position, yet what did you realize of the houses of your newborn's friends or your household? do not keep your head contained in the sand! prepare your toddlers!

OOPS! Why in the world would a 3 year old EVER be left alone to defend herself??? I grew up in a family of hunters and I learned to handle a .22 rifle early and was given my first one when I was eleven. A hand gun is another thing and IS NOT FOR A CHILD OF THREE. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING???
