Just like Doctors don't start by simply walking into a hospital and saying "I'd like to be a Doctor"... and Airline Pilots don't get their start by walking into the headquarters of American Airlines and saying "I'd like to become a pilot"... you need to learn how to become an actor, by taking lessons.
Find a class near you, and get started. Check out local community theater... audition for parts in small productions, and work your way up. A good acting teacher can help you get where you want to be.
Don't get an acting coach... enroll in a class. You need to be surrounded by students. You learn an awfull lot simply by watching others... you need to see not only what they are doing right, but what they are doing wrong... learn from their mistakes, and learn from their stellar examples. Performing in front of fellow students helps you to learn to be at ease performing in front of any group.

Start auditioning and subscribe to a paper that lists parts up for grabs. Also, acting classes can really help.

I would take acting lessons first, then when you think you are ready, go on auditions!
Don't feel bad if you don't get anything at first. Just keep trying!
Break a leg!!

Find a light opera company or a local playhouse. They usually can use people. It will give you experience and it is the kind of place that you will get seen, and who knows? Maybe discovered.

It might be best to enter some small theater productions before heading so big. I would check to see if there were any openings in your area.
