It could be a couple things. If you had removed the floppy drive and reconnected the ribbon upside down. They are different sizes so it is obvious which one it is. I have had and still have 3.5" drives for years and not broken down yet. I'm talking about 15 years here. They are cheap if you need one. As for IDE not compatible. There is a couple things to look for. When booting your computer, hit del when the screen comes up. Check out the list of hard drives on the screen, and even use the autodetect. One of the opening boot screens shows the list of connected drives. In windows. Check out the device manager to see if there are any conflicts in the list. Check out "my computer" and get properties for the drives. That's the basics. If you have a hard drive as C with NTFS and you are booting from an older floppy, then it may not recognize the drive.

My experience is that floppy drives fail fairly easily. I've seen them break by installing a defective disk. Spending $ 10.00 on a new floppy drive and using new disks is cheap insurance.

Agreed (first answer). Try reinstalling the driver and/or using Flash and CD-ROM drives as opposed to floppies.

solution is stop using floppy, i quit 3.5 diskets like 2, 3 years ago, and in the times of USBs which has like 1gb and more, and their cheap prices, floppy is like having cassete reader when IBM became more popular with its 75mhz intel ;)

Double check which port the FD is plugging into of the system board bus.
In fact, when you have the case open, double check all bus and device connections.
Good Luck.
Have fun but be safe.
