First you've gotta be at least 6'0. At LEAST! Most are going 6'2-6'5. (remember, it's not called the big leagues for nothing.) You'd better be able to run for miles (endurance). You'd better have 3 good pitches. I'm not talking that circle change you throw to your brother in law in the back yard on labor day either.

The most important of all is you'd better be pumping over 90mph with EASE. They don't care if you can pop the glove once at 90, they want it over 7 innings.

So once you're hitting 90 over 5-7 innings, you'd better hit spots. A guy who can put it in there over 90 without location is a thrower, not a pitcher.

If you're a right hander, even with all those tools above, you'll get lost in the mix. There are enough guys coming out of Big 10 schools and the Domincan republic to fill the void. If you are a lefty, at least they'd give you a second look (providing you had all the tools above.)

From there, you just gotta hope to get lucky. The right guy spots you throwing a no hitter some day or you find out about a local tryout. One word on tryouts though...... Don't get your hopes up. They are looking for the DIAMOND in the ROUGH. Understand that Chipper Jones threw 90 mph in high school. They are looking for the one that sticks out and everyone in the whole place can see it (If they decide to sign someone that day).

Oh well, on a good note, if you do get to go to a tryout you'll really get an understanding of what it takes. That's a good gauge. See what guys they ask to stay for the second half of the tryout. It's standard Operating procedure at a pro tryout to cut 80% of the people trying out after the following,
1. 60 yard dash
2. how far you can throw the ball on a LINE.
Yup..... 80% after those two drills. What about hitting? Hitting can be taught, running and throwing are athletic things that you either have or you don't.

There you go, the no nonsense, reality of it all answer.

Yes. Especially if you are a left handed pitcher and can throw a fast ball over 90mph. Every MLB club has open tryouts in multiple locations around the US. Check their websites or call their front office for details. Also, if you can find an Independant Minor League team...they always have open tryouts. Scouts often attend games in these leagues looking for hidden talent.

Yes, but you better get moving. You might have an interesting experience if you talk to the pitching coach for a minor league team. These guys are FAR more approachable than coaches in the majors and can give you great advice.

well it has happened. have u seen the movie "the rookie" with dennis quaid?

so anyways some teams hold open tryouts where u have to pay a fee i think and then show the coaches what u got.

btw have u pitched recently and have u been clocked to see how hard u throw

Probably but it will be very hard. You have to start out low and and work your way. You need to try out for a minor league team to start.

The odds would be against it even if you hadn't stopped throwing but they would be astronomical now and at your age though. But you never know. If you're left handed and can throw strikes you would have a better chance than if you're right handed.

You can try but it will be hard. Usually you spend several years in the minors before being called up.

Odds are against you, but sure you can. I agree you must rent the Rookie.

Develop a knuckleball. If you are left-handed it would be a plus
