veronica, the minimum should be 512Mb of RAM, although another 128MB would show some improvement to the system, and the slow startup is with all computers, it depends on what you have loading at startup, go to run, msconfig, enter, and it will pop up the MsConfig Box, go to startup, and uncheck those that you do not need to start up, I personally have my firewall, my volume, and my AntiVirus as the only three that start with the computer, and another thing folks don't understand or know is that when the PC starts, it has to load ALL of the Fonts that are used by programs, I have deleted some that I never, or never will use, like the OddBall Bold ones, that I cannot pronounce, etc. This also will improve the startup time.. But at least doubling the memory should show a little improvement, you need to check what the PC is compatible with as far as memory, and how much can you upgrade to, if any.. Good Luck

Adding RAM will speed things up considerably. XP is recomended to have at least 256MB. Another 128 MB module should be fairly cheap, but I'd recomend going for 512. Check this site out, and run the scan to see what your PC is capable of.

Also, if you say you are getting good at helping yourself, do a Disk Cleanup,Disk Check, and Defrag your HDD.(in that order) That will help, without forking out any dough.

Check this out as well.
