You can try clicking View at the top of your screen, a menu will drop down, put your cursor on Text Size, another menu will pop up, click a smaller text size. Medium text is normal. You might also press and hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and turn your mouse wheel. If this doesn't fix the problem you might need to change the font size.
To change your Window fonts:
Open Display in Control Panel.
On the Appearance tab, in Font size, click a new font size.
Click Apply
To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
This option enables you to enlarge the fonts used in window headers, icon labels, and menus.
The font size options are based on the current theme, visual style, and color scheme. For some themes, styles, or schemes, you may only have one font size option.

It sounds as if your resolution is set too low at home, and too much junk slowing down the downloading of pics. A defrag and adjusting screen resolution (Right click Desktop, Properties, Settings, increase resolution size) may help.
