They're both potentially great doctors, the difference is how much schooling they have. IM doctors have a little bit more schooling. But this doesn't neccescarily make them better.

Make sure that the doctor that you choose has similar philosophies to you. Make sure that your first visit is just a "consultation" so you can decide if you really want this person managing your health or not.

All docs have the two an MD (healthcare expert) or OD (healthcare expert of osteopathy. the adaptation between a kinfolk practitioner and an internist is the residency they have executed. Internists diagnose and cope with scientific problems of the person affected person's inner organs; heart (high blood pressure and intense ldl cholesterol), liver, kidneys, pancreas (diabetes), lungs, and gall bladder. in addition they are going to seek advice from surgeons of all types and different scientific specialties. A kinfolk practitioner's emphasis is on preventative drugs interior the context of the kinfolk. they have better training in obstetrics, pediatrics, and geriatrics, which maximum internists do no longer. they are knowledgeable to refer sufferers to professionals for problems that are complicated and positively deliver sufferers to an internist if the affected person has diverse scientific problems.

'They' say that:
An Internist knows everything but does nothing.
A Family practice dr. know & does everything.
A Orthopedist knows nothing but does everything.
An Emergency Dr. knows & does everything.
A Pathologist knows and does everything - but it's too late!

So, rather than being 'referred' to another specialist I'd go for the Family Practice guy. He knows AND does!

Hope this helps!

a family doctor usually takes care of everyone, mom, dad & kids (general practitioner). A Internist typially takes care of adults with some kind of specialty (i.e. diabetes) as an additional care.
