When praying do you ask him or thank him for giving it to you in advance? I have been so enlightened so far by a book called conversations with god. Are you familiar?

you don't have to read a book on how to pray- all God wants from you is to be sincere- If you're not saved, then you must be saved in order to really communicate with God and for him to communicate back to you, some people get it mixed and think that God really hears them, but if you get into the word of Gos, you will read that he doesn't really hear, but when he knows you are being sincere and ready to give up to him, but you can pray and ask for what you need, but when you thank him, you're giving him the praise and you're worshipping him- so there are really two different type of prayers

Our hearts should always be full of thankfulness even if what the Lord gives us isn't what we asked for. But more than just asking Him for things, we should first learn to be content as if He was all we had. Remember that Solomon didn't ask for riches but for wisdom. God gave Him so much more than he asked for because Solomon sought God first. Check out Matthew 6:25-34 for what I think is a good place to start when it comes to seeking what we need.

I came to this question thinking about it as a parent (God is our Heavenly Father after all) and if I always knew what my child needed, would they ever have to ask for anything? Probably no. On that end I say "Thanks" to God. I think the other end of prayer, for things in the future or wants, is done more for my sake. It helps me clear up what I want and in turn gives me a direction to travel to get them. It gives me something to be positive about and if I am positive then life is good.
